Holiday Bike Ride

Tour de Tacky Coat Ride

Cosmic Winter approaches! Put on your ugliest sweater, ready your spaceship with the tackiest decorations, and join the New Bedford Starchasers on an adventure to explore holiday lights and bring cold weather gear to LGBTQ+ youth in need, this winter! We are accepting new or gently-worn coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. Donations benefit NB-AGLY. This mission is free, radically inclusive, and open to the public.

Ways to give:

• Join the mission! Bring your ship and donations to the launchpad at the Buttonwood Park Warming House. Together, we’ll fly to the drop-site in the Clasky Common Constellation.

• Rendezvous! Meet us at the launchpad with your donations and we’ll deliver them for you.

• Checkpoint! Drop your donations at one of the checkpoints along the route and we’ll pick them up as we go. DROP SITES are located at the following coordinates within the New Bedford Starsystem: 120 Sycamore St., 188 Cottage St., 174 Jonathan St., and Boutique Fitness in Downtown New Bedford!

It’s about to get cold. Hoth cold. Like that planet in ‘Empire’. But we’re not just gonna curl up inside a Tauntaun and wait for warmer days. No! Those things smell bad enough on the outside. We’re fighting back against the cold with the warmth in our hearts.

NB-AGLY is a community-based organization dedicated to providing support, resources, and safe spaces to LGBTQ+ youth and their allies. A division of South Coast LGBTQ Network, NB-AGLY is youth-driven, peer-led, and adult-supported. Bike Path Extension

I live only a few hundred feet from the Phoenix Bike Path in Fairhaven, MA. Twenty five years ago, the path was engineered, financed and ready to be built through Fairhaven, Mattapoisett and Marion, MA.  at a total cost of around $650 K.  Mattapoisett and Marion got cold feet thinking the world would end if they paved and existing RR route, isolated in the wooded, overgrown area.

The town of Mattapoisett finally decided to allow the bike path extension and work has begun.

This is a three year old extension

I decided to take a ride and check out the progress.  (with one of my SA masks. Buy one get 4 free). I also had a difficult time getting my bike around the do not enter barricade

Providence Bike Jam (PBJ), Zombie Ride

IMG_1501

It seems that every time we do a night group ride, it’s the best one ever.  Which translates to really mean that it’s the best since the last one.  Providence Bike Jam outdid themselves when they colluded with Dash Bike in Providence.   Dash is located a bit less than a mile from the PBJ start at Burnside Park smack in the heart of downtown Providence.

Two dance stops were included in this clear, mild, Friday night casual ride, and the evening culminated at Trinity Brewhouse. The traffic, probably because of our numbers and the three synchronized boom boxes, was very receptive to us.  Lots of cameras came out from both pedestrians and drivers.  We had people on bikes that acted as crossing guards. They did a superb job keeping us all safe by blocking cross traffic and the intersections.  Oncoming cars stopped to let the sixty or so riders pass on the narrow streets we traversed.

For years this was the Critical Mass ride, usually drawing 15-18 riders.  Once the name changed, the popularity soared.  One ride that included the Mayor of Providence, drew over 200 cyclists.  PVD has become the group ride to experience.  All skill levels, ages and bike types are welcome to join this casual ride the last Friday of every month.

Below are the video and photo movies. Enjoy
