Racing the Rain

Day 7 of 30 Days of biking
Day 7 of 30 days of biking

I wanted to get a ride in simply to satisfy my 30 days of biking commitment.  I figured to be racing the rain and on the way home after the coffee shop and market stop, the wind really began to whip up it’s fury.  I knew the rains were imminent as soon as the wind died down. Well….It’s two hours later and still no rain.  I’m taking the dogs for a long walk and if the rain has still not arrived, I’m gong for a bike ride to the city for lunch.  Mind you, I ride in the rain.  I don’t like it, but I do.  Wish me luck.

Mark Your Calender. Rails to Trails Opening Day

Opening Day for Trails on April 16!

All you need to do to take part in Opening Day is just get out on your local trail. How easy is that?!

Be sure to use the hashtag #RTCOpeningDay, and share your photos and posts of your trail outing. And of course, get your friends on board! (We think a day on the trail with friends is just that much more fun.) Send them to railstotrails.org/openingday.

I will be riding from Ft Hill (Corner of Lyon St and Veterans Memorial Parkway) in East Providence to Warren R I. with a 9 AM start.  There we will stop at the Coffee Depot for a snack or light breakfast before returning back to Fort Hill.  The Cafe Tour people will be  riding to Bristol Bagel in that town if you want to do the end to end ride of the East Bay Bike Path.

Day 5 of 30 Days of Biking

I had to return my new camera that had a major issue.  One of the Geeks at best buy made sure that it was a defective camera and not operator error. I was hoping it was only a setting that I screwed up, but the screen was defective.  Because I got the display model, replacing it would cost me around a hundred twenty five more.  I found one that is better suited to my use and to my surprise, Best Buy discounted it 10% for my troubles so it cost me less than $100 for a really good camera.

I’m on Day 5 of the 30 days of biking challenge and because of the weather, a challenge is an understatement.  It was cold and windy most of the day.  However, things had changed for the better around 3 PM which made it an easy choice to ride to Yoga class.  I got to try out the new camera and am liking it a lot.

Riding To The Polls On Day 4 Of 30 Days of Biking

It’s been horrific weather since I committed to the 30 Days of Biking challenge.  Heavy rains threatened to make the first two days, in Provincetown, MA a miserable ride.  However, both days gave a good window which allowed me to ride between the cells and get a good amount of miles in. 30 Days Of Biking Day 2. Provincetown, MA

It rained all day and was getting late.  I needed to get out and ride to fulfill my obligation to 30 days of biking.  Once I decided to go for it, the rain lightened and eventually stopped. I did get caught in a couple of meaningless light showers which was no big deal. Provincetown is a highly rated biking area with a good mix of trails, lightly traveled roads and challenging hills.

I learned just yesterday from Hank that there is a 30 day bike challenge going on.  I haven’t looked into it yet but figure it’s riding every day for the month of April.  We are in Provincetown and the far tip of Cape Cod and it’s been torrential rain all day.  The rain stopped just as our guests arrived.  I explained to them what I was doing and needed to go for a short ride.  I really can’t miss the first day of a committed ride.  This is going to be difficult week for riding.  An arctic front is moving through with a snow storm on Sunday.  I don’t know the rules of minimum miles but am guessing is just a ride miles be damned.

Here are the P-Town short ride photos

Touring season is approaching and I took the steel bike for a longish ride to the town of Wareham Ma.  The Novara has been in my stable since 2008 when I did my first tour of the Erie Canal.

Wareham has been my go to ride for medium miles for years. There are two hills to climb to get to the center of town on the back road route.  As I was climbing the first hill, a 30 something rider passed me and the only thing she did was a psheh sound when she looked at me and my bike. An old guy, no helmet, riding steel. psheh. Continue reading “Novara Randonee Touring Bike.”

Taxes, Yoga and Football

I wanted to ride today but things conspired against me doing a long ride.  Putting all the stuff together and entering everything into tax software can be tedious. By the time I sat down to begin entering the figures and descriptions it was after 11 AM.  By noon time I had most of the federal stuff done, and my wife had roasted some cauliflower and asparagus for lunch. I got on the  bike and rode to Subway. Continue reading “Taxes, Yoga and Football”

Commuting To Work. 10 Years Ago

Some of my blogging friends are beginning to bike commute to work again.  Some ride year round, some don’t.  I took me a few years to begin year round bike commuting and I did is sparingly in the winter.  Once the weather broke the miles added up seemingly exponentially. Riding my bike was the best part of my work day.

That Was Then

This is now

We owned a Luncheonette just outside the gate  of an army base and it was also the end of the line for the public buses.  In the 40’s and 50’s at around 11:30 PM, my parents would begin cooking and wrapping hamburgers in wax paper.  Soon the buses filled with soldiers would arrive and after drinking too much, they would stop into our place and order hamburgers.  Four, five, six at a time.  They were drunk and in a hurry to get back on base before the midnight curfew.  You could say, we were one of the first fast food burger joints.  Being the industrious sort, my father also had a couple of spare bedrooms upstairs and hired really good looking waitresses, if you get my drift.  In the 40’s and 50’s my family was pretty well off.
