So Close

Seeking Shelter

I have signed up for the National Bike Challenge, (in partnership with Cottonelle). When I pledged to do 30 days of biking, it rained, snowed, was cold, windy and raw for the first week.  It hasn’t snowed during the first week of this challenge, but it has rained every day. Being part of a challenge does get me out to ride when normally, days like today, would be go to a movie or watch TV.  Smart phones make it possible to keep and eye on the approaching rains in real time so I can either take shelter for a while, or beat feet it home. That system works pretty pretty good, but there are times when things don’t.  For instance…

There Is A Storm A Brew’n

The forecast ranges from three to eight inches of snow.  It’s very difficult to predict snowfall amounts for coastal communities because of the ocean effect.  Ten miles inland, the weather people are within millimeters of accumulation.  By the end of the week, there will probably be no evidence that it ever snowed. It will be back to bike riding weather in the 50s and 60s.

Sunday is one of my days to ride my bike into the city for Yoga. It’s part of the city’s wellness initiative and every few weeks the a new yogi does the sessions.  Sarah, who finished today practiced Forrest Yoga.  It was pretty demanding, and if I was doing that at home I would have moaned and grunted.  A lot.  However, I’m the only male in the class so I have to represent, if you know what I mean.  No complaining. Riding With The Fall River Bike Group On The Roads Less Traveled

The Road Less Traveled

The Daily Post asked us to write about the road less traveled.  A suggestion was made on the topic but today’s bike ride on the quiet roads on the SouthCoast of Massachusetts made the daily post very apropos.

The Fall River Bike Committee put the word out for a bike ride in my back yard. I offered to lead the ride, they accepted, and we rode. The group set the pace to accommodate some new riders who by the way did wonderful and liked it.

One Hundred Million Dollars

The day screamed for a long bike ride and I decided to cross the bridge into the city of New Bedford.  I ran into a fellow bike rider and invited him to join our ride on Sunday.  When I told him it would be around 30 miles he reneged saying his bike was only good for 20 miles or less. I mentioned that we stopped at a cafe half way through the ride, so it’s actually two 15 mile rides, which is well within his 20 mile limit.  He didn’t bite.  Continue reading “One Hundred Million Dollars”

I’m Calling the EPA

Today’s daily post suggestion.

Karma Chameleon Reincarnation: do you believe in it?

Do you believe in heaven and hell?  Gods? Aliens? Ghost? How about crop circles? Reincarnation is in the same category as all those other things.  I know none of those exist, so my answer is no, I don’t believe in reincarnation or any of those other things.  But they can be fun pranks to play on people.

Coffee, Bagel and the paper.

It was such a nice morning,29 and sunny, that I had my coffee and a bagel on the outside deck of Flower Girls Baking Company after my daily gym session.  Today is also a nice day to go for a long enough ride to put on my Garmin. Stay tuned.  Continue reading “I’m Calling the EPA”

Time Travel

Mad Libs

Turn to your co-workers, kids, Facebook friends, family — anyone who’s accessible — and ask them to suggest an article, an adjective, and a noun. There’s your post title! Now write.

My daily bike ride this time of year is the same as the day before.  A one mile ride to the gym, then to the market for tonight’s meal ingredients, then to a coffee shop to read the NY Times over a good cup of Joe .   There is not much different to say or show that I haven’t posted at least a couple of times.  However, I have two dogs.

Trombone Shorty Again

trombone shorty at the Z

The Stat Connection Maybe this will be my best stats post. It’s certainly good enough.
Last week I got three hard to get tickets to the local performing arts center for the Trombone Shorty Show.   I can say without any reservation that this was the wildest most entertaining performance I have ever, ever attended.  See if you agree.  Go full screen and go loud.

Winter Has Settled In

Live to Eat
Lots of physical activity, especially bike riding, keep me from turning into a blown up tic from eating too much.

When I ride the MUP (Multi Use Path) there is one spot that always gives me a ever changing view of itself.  There is so much activity on the salt marsh if we pay attention. As I rode by on my newly studded tires the ducks called to me.  They were really warning each other that I was around, but I take it as a compliment. Ducks in Saltmarsh 002

The path was quite a mixed terrain ride today.  Icy tire tracks, deep-ish snow, blacktop and mush.  Today was my first day on studded tires, and frankly it kind of knocked the stuffing out of me a few times. I had to buy the tires separately which gives me 200+ studs on the front and 75 studs on the rear tire.  When I hit some of the deeper snow, (about three or four inches) the back tire would slip and slide making me tense up and struggle to keep upright. I was able to force myself to keep pedaling through the more natural thing of taking my foot off the pedal anticipating a fall. The sliding made it very difficult to hold any kind of a line in the tire tracks which seemed more like the side to side down hill skiing than bike riding.   Continue reading “Winter Has Settled In”
